These intimate Friday tours to various local farms, creameries and artisan purveyors are some of the most popular and coveted of events of the weekend. Get an “up close and personal” glimpse into the important role of the farmers and producers of the rich northern California agricultural farming area. Learn how cheese and other artisanal products are made on these guided tours. Meet the cheesemakers, producers, and farmers behind these stellar local foods and beverages. And, of course, prepare for generous tastings and in-depth insight with industry experts. Bring your ice chest as cheese and artisan products are available for purchase on most tours. Lunch is provided.

Tour A Cows, Goats, Cheese and Wine!

This tour departs from and returns to 1800 South McDowell Boulevard Petaluma, CA.

Pt. Reyes Farmstead Cheese Company, Achadinha Cheese Co, Keller Estates Winery

Start your day at Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese Co. where you will enjoy a cheese tasting hosted by your personal cheese concierge on the gorgeous patio of The Fork, the company’s Culinary & Educational Center. In addition to the bucolic view of cows on pastures overlooking Tomales Bay, a stroll through the edible garden and your delicious assortment of cheeses, you will be guided around the farm for an informational walking tour that includes the history of the 64-year second generation dairy, close-up interactions with the Holstein herd, and the inside scoop on this women-owned, sustainable and award-winning operation. Next, head to Achadinha Cheese Company, family farm and creamery nestled in the verdant Petaluma hills.  Jim and Donna Pacheco, with help from their four children, milk cows and goats and make cheese inspired by their family legacy and the Old World traditions of Portugal.  Tour the farm, meet their animals, learn more about the Pachecos dairy practices and taste their unique farmstead cheeses. After enjoying lunch provided by Palace Market you will visit Keller Estates Winery where a peaceful walking tour of the Keller Estate grounds gives way to a comfortable seated wine tasting experience. The winery features a selection of estate grown chardonnay, pinot noir, syrah and pinot gris which you will sample along with a variety of perfectly paired cheeses from Cowgirl Creamery. The diversity of their wines comes from years of vineyard exploration, a careful understanding of the Petaluma Gap, how their grapes grow in this wine region, and respect for the essence of our fruit. This sustainably certified vineyard incorporates practices derived from organics and regenerative farming that have been learned over the years. These practices include beekeeping, owl and bat boxes, a flock of over 200 sheep that graze and fertilize the land, and careful management of the pond system that ensures their water supply.

Tomales Farmstead Creamery, Valley Ford Cheese & Creamery, Achadinha Cheese Co., Sonoma Portworks

Travel twenty minutes west of Petaluma to begin your day at Toluma Farms, where owners Tamara Hicks and David Jablons have lovingly restored a 160-acre former cow dairy.  Toluma Farms is now home to a herd of goats, a flock of sheep, and Tomales Farmstead Creamery.  You’ll tour the organic pastures, meet the goats, sheep, and their pink-nosed babies, and taste an array of cheeses. Next you will head north to the Valley Ford Cheese & Creamery in the quaint village of Valley Ford.  This exciting venture from Karen Bianchi-Moreda and her son Joe builds on her family’s storied 100-year dairy legacy in coastal California, marrying café and cheese ripening.  Devour a delicious cheese-focused lunch at the café before enjoying a tour and focused tasting of Valley Ford cheeses, crafted with milk from Karen’s son Jim’s nearby herd of Jersey cows. With a full belly it’s time to relax on the 30 minute ride back to Petaluma and a visit to Achadinha Cheese Company, family farm and creamery nestled in the verdant Petaluma hills.  Jim and Donna Pacheco, with help from their four children, milk cows and goats and make cheese inspired by their family legacy and the Old World traditions of Portugal.  Tour the farm, meet their animals, learn more about their dairy practices and taste their unique farmstead cheeses. End your day  with a visit  to Sonoma Portworks, the only winery in Sonoma County specializing in ports and after-dinner wines. This artisan winery produces award-winning products. During this stop, you will sample 4 different after-dinner wines, one of their distilled spirits, along with their non-alcoholic food products, Sonomic Almost Vinegar and cheese from Cypress Grove.  You will get to tour the production area and hear how ports differ from other table wines, as well as learn about the unique hand (and foot) processes that make the wines different from other ports around the world.

 

Il Fusti Olive Oil & Vinegar, Wm.Cofield Cheesemakers, Woodfour Brewing, Pax Wines

Who doesn’t want to start their morning with amazing olive oil, delicious bread and creamy cheese? At Il Fusti you will hear about Paul and Suzie’s dream to open up an olive oil and vinegar tasting room at The Barlow in downtown Sebastopol, while you taste the olive oil and vinegars with bread from Red Bird Bakery and cheese from Beehive Creamery.  Here, you can taste, compare and choose from traditional and flavored products to take a bottle or two home. From there you will take a short stroll to Woodfour Brewing. This farmhouse brewery is a beer aficionado’s delight. At Woodfour, which focuses on cultivating the finest rustic and delicious craft brews, you will enjoy a tour of the production facility followed by a tasting of their saisons, sours and barrel-aged beers. Following the tour you will enjoy lunch in the Woodfour restaurant that features roll-up garage style doors allowing a nice flow of air to come in and for the dining room to connect with the outside. Surrounded by edible landscapes, it is a unique brewery eating spot with a relaxed atmosphere and warm service, bringing you great food and drink created by local ingredients.  Feeling full?  Time to walk off that lunch as you head to Wm. Cofield Cheesemakers where you will be able to see how proper British style cheese is made from start to finish — from the milk vats operating on site to the aging room to the packaging and shipping area.  Following the tour, you will enjoy a full tasting of all Wm. Cofield has to offer. You will finish your day with a stop at Pax Wines to learn about the holistic style of winemaking that is practiced by Pax and Pamela Mahle and what makes their wines so unique.  You will have an opportunity to taste their wines while pairing with cheese from Beehive Creamery. This tour starts at Il Fusti and ends at Pax Wines. The other stops are a short walking distance away.

Cofield Cheesemakers where you will see how proper British style cheese is made from start to finish — from the milk vats operating on site to the aging room to the packaging and shipping area. Following the tour, you will enjoy lunch and drinks on their picnic benches. Feeling full, it will be time for a short walk to Woodfour Brewing. This farmhouse brewery is a beer aficionado’s delight. At Woodfour, which focuses on cultivating the finest rustic and delicious craft brews, you will enjoy a tour of the production. You will finish your day with a stop at Pax Wines to learn about the holistic style of winemaking that is practiced by Pax and Pamela Mahle and what makes their wines so unique.  You will have an opportunity to taste their wines while pairing with cheese from Beehive Creamery. Nicasio Valley Cheese Company, Heidrun Meadery, Marin French Cheese Co.

Nicasio Valley Cheese Company is California’s only organic farmstead creamery.  Third generation dairy farmers, the Lafranchi family has been ranching in Nicasio for over a hundred years, and began crafting farmstead cheese with organic milk from their herd of Holsteins in 2010.  Tour their beautiful pastures, visit the creamery, and taste their award-winning cheeses that capture the sense of place on this 1,150-acre family ranch. From there you will head to Point Reyes Station for a visit to Heidrun Meadery. Experience an expertly guided tour of their production facility and discover how sparkling mead is made; see their estate honeybees in the act of nectar cultivation and learn about their bee forage farm program, all while enjoying a sampling of their wonderfully refreshing sparkling mead varietals. After enjoying a picnic lunch provided by Palace Market you’ll wrap up your day at Marin French Cheese, the country’s oldest continuously operating cheese company.  Explore this historic property, enjoy the vistas of the Hicks Valley and the surrounding verdant hills, and taste their award-winning cheeses.

Start your day at Marin French Cheese, the country’s oldest continuously operating cheese company.  Explore the historic property, From there you will head to Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese Co. where you will enjoy a cheese tasting hosted by your personal cheese concierge on the gorgeous patio of The Fork, the company’s Culinary & Educational Center. In addition to the bucolic view of cows on pastures overlooking Tomales Bay, a stroll through the edible garden and your delicious assortment of cheeses, you will be guided around the farm for an informational walking tour that includes the history of the 64-year second generation dairy, close-up interactions with the Holstein herd, and the inside scoop on this women-owned, sustainable and award-winning operation. The tour will be followed by a casual lunch prepared by Executive Chef Jennifer Luttrell.  Relax and enjoy the landscape during a 20-minute drive back to Petaluma for a final stop at Adobe Road Winery. Here you will taste through their fabulous selections of Chardonnays, Pinots and Cabernets in their charming downtown tasting room located in the historic Petaluma Mill.  Adobe Road’s small production, hand crafted wines pair perfectly with a variety of cheeses and will provide you with a truly memorable wine and food experience.

Spenker Family Farm and Winery, Stuyt Dairy Farmstead Cheese

The Spenker Family Farm includes a vineyard and winery and a goat dairy and creamery in Lodi, CA. Four generations over 120 years have sustainably farmed their land for quality products. The family delights in sharing the joys of farming with their customers. Springtime brings the birth of baby goats and the onset of the busy milking season. The tour starts with guest participation in one of their most popular joy-filled experiences...GOAT YOGA! A certified Yoga instructor will guide you through a 40 minute class -  stretching, breathing, and mindfulness of yoga exercises, while the kids romp and play around the pen and with you. While not your regular exercise class, you will be relaxed and restored by the sweet experience (participation optional)! Following the class, you will take a guided walking tour of the vineyard, winery, dairy, milking parlor and make room before enjoying a wine and cheese pairing and a locally made box lunch. Next stop, Stuyt Dairy Farmstead Cheese Company located in Escalon, California. Established in 2015, the Stuyt’s began by making cheese best described as a Dutch-style cheese handmade from raw cow's milk. Stuyt cheese is aged a minimum of 60 days, yet, preferred 90 days for the best flavor. They have expanded their line to include fresh cheese curds and spreads, alongside queso panela. Your guided tour of the creamery will include a behind-the-scenes look into the processing room, the aging room, and the brine room followed by a sampling of their award-winning cheeses and a visit to their gift shop. This tour is especially interesting as you will learn about the difference between pasteurized and raw milk cheese and fresh and aged cheese! Please note, this tour involves approximately an hour ride to the first location and an additional hour for the return trip from the last location.

Rumiano Cheese Co, Sierra Nevada Cheese Co., Farmers Brewing

Founded in 1919 by brothers Fred, John and Richard Rumiano, Rumiano Cheese Company’s operations and management now includes 4th generation Rumianos. On this tour, you’ll see the past and future as you tour both of Rumiano’s Willows, CA  facilities. Get a rare look at the past as you visit Rumiano’s 100-year-old Dry Jack aging cellar, where the 3 Rumiano Brothers started it all. Then advance to the future where you will see their brand new, state-of-the-art cheese cutting and packaging lines. Next stop is East to Sierra Nevada Cheese Company where you will learn about the traditional processes used to create their wholesome dairy products where the milk and the cultures are all they need.  After lunch, provided by Bacio-Chico, and a cheese tasting paired with local wines, you will head to Farmers Brewing Company where you will go behind the scenes to learn about their history, production facility, and brewing process. Farmers Brewing Co. is 100% family owned, situated on their family farm in Princeton, California. Their focus is on creating sessionable style beers that are clean, crisp, and easy drinking for all. At Pennyroyal farm every goat, sheep and cheese has a name and this is your opportunity to meet them.  Enjoy a guided tour of Pennyroyal's farmstead creamery -- including a walk-through of the solar-powered barn to meet the animals -- and learn about the integrative methods behind their handcrafted cheese and the unique story behind how the cheeses are named.  The tour concludes with a cheese tasting.  Following the tour, take a short drive down the road to Anderson Valley Brewing. For over thirty years, Anderson Valley Brewing Company has been hand-crafting authentic ales and lagers with balance, complexity, and a passion for sustainable brewing practices. Enjoy your charcuterie box lunch curated by Pennyroyal along with your choice of beverage before joining the General Manager or the Head Brewer, for a guided walk through the whole brewery, including the vintage copper kettle brew house, cellar operations, packaging department and the barrel room, with each step of the process explained.
